Offer in Compromise

In certain cases a tax debt may be settled for a fraction of what is owed.  The IRS code specifically permits the IRS to accept an offer of settlement on a tax liability if it seems unlikely that the tax debt can be recovered in full and the offer is reasonable given the circumstances.  There are no pre-set limits as to how much or how little will be accepted by the IRS to settle the tax debt through an Offer in Compromise.

The application process for an Offer in Compromise can be cumbersome and the documents are quite exhaustive.  Failure to complete the forms correctly could result in rejection of the Offer in Compromise or an acceptance of an amount far greater than the tax debt could have settled for if done properly.

A tax attorney or tax lawyer may be able to assist you in the preparation of an Offer in Compromise in order to obtain an IRS tax settlement.  In some cases a qualified tax professional can help estimate the lowest amount that may be accepted prior to making the Offer in Compromise thus resulting in a more favorable settlement.
